Holy Mother of Mary

The assistant didn’t say anything on the journey. She simply directed the golf cart through the halls. It gave Mary plenty of time to think. Too much time. She fought down her impatience. It wouldn’t do any good to give over her energy to what ifs. Besides, she wanted to believe this woman was taking her to see her mother. In spite of herself, she wanted to trust the man who called himself the Director. She pondered that for a moment, but couldn’t make anything of it.

Then they arrived, and the woman showed her into a small room with three chairs and a large window. Mary immediately crossed to the window and looked through into a hospital room. Her mother was there. She looked very small, lying in a bed that looked more like an astronaut’s chair in the center of a tiled room. Everything was medical white, making it look like a set from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Mary felt a sob rise in her throat, and she put her hand over her mouth to hold the sound in. It was such a relief just to know her mother was alive, to see her again, to know where she was. Well, at least to be where she was, even if she didn’t know where that was. The sobs tried to turn into giddy laughter, but Mary did her best to stay silent.

She stared. It was definitely Helen Braeburn. She wasn’t wearing makeup, and her hair had several inches of gray roots that would really piss her off when she awoke, but her color was pretty good. Other than being unconscious, she looked pretty healthy. Most of her body was hidden under a sheet or in restraints of some kind, but Mary could see she was breathing deeply, like she was in a sound sleep. There was no kind of breathing apparatus on her, and somehow that relieved her greatly.

“Oh, Mama,” she said to the glass. “What have you gotten us into?”

She turned and found the assistant had disappeared again. The way that kept happening was really annoying. She crossed and tried the door handle, but she already knew she would find it locked. At least the chairs looked comfortable. She pulled one nearer to the glass and sat down to watch her mother breathe. She noticed the room wasn’t really all white, as it had first appeared. There were scorch marks on several places on the floor. Against one wall were the remnants of what appeared to be a plastic hospital tray, melted into the wallpaper. Mary could see her mother had not been a docile or patient prisoner. She was glad. She didn’t like the idea of her mother passively accepting capture.

As she watched, a light went off on one of the monitors. Then there were balls of flame in her mother’s hands. Mary stood, trying to decide if she should somehow alert someone, wondering if the glass between her and the hospital room was fireproof.
